KOZURE OKAMI SANZU NO KOWA NO UBAGURUMA (1972)
Director: Kenji Misumi
Cinematographer: Chikashi Makiura
After one of the most awkward “love” (?!) scenes in cinema history, truly in league with Deckard teaching Rachael the Robot how to be sexy in Blade Runner, villainess Sayaka takes what I believe is a thoughtful walk topside on an overnight river cruise to try and figure out what the fuck just happened to her.
“Surely that little boy was far too old to be breastfed! Plus I’m not actually producing milk.” She must be thinking. “But whatever. Life, huh?! At least they have a free buffet onboard this floating shithole!”
Still, art through adversity and all that, so we get this lavish shot of her deep in thought somewhere, which I’m gonna go ahead and assume includes matte painting elements. Oh I don’t know. I’m not even sure what we’re supposed to be seeing, or even if the characters are all still on a boat. That’ll be my poor vision and short attention span hard at work! This is what I have to deal with on a daily basis, people.
But I think I get the idea.
Sort of.
In short, I really shouldn’t be commenting on visual media with the blissful ignorance in which I am.
Where are James Cameron’s trusty blue nighttime-lighting gels when you need them?!
Do stay in touch, darlings.
Toodles!
