Framed to Perfection IX

FANNY OCH ALEXANDER (1983 EXTENDED CUT)

Director: Ingmar Bergman

Cinematographer: Sven Nykvist

The pious hand of evil creeps in!

You can tell the filmmakers absolutely revelled in this moment. They linger on it so gloriously. It’s just a shame Fanny and Alexander is just another in a long line of villainous-stepparent works of culture. There must be some nice ones out there, surely! Where’s their story?!

I vaguely remember watching this longer television version back when I was a kid, but being rather unmoved by it. Well, except for Bertil Guve’s captivating eyes, that is, but I’ve obviously grown out of that.

I watched the cinema version found in this Blu-ray boxset a couple of years ago, so have been psyching myself up for the whopping 5-hour experience ever since. I’ll let you know how it goes once I finish at around Christmas.

That’s Christmas of next year.

I just hope it’s not quite as stress-inducing as the shorter cut, as nothing riles an atheist up more than an abusive religious zealot. Still, Jan Malmsjö portrays one of cinemas great screen villains to moustache-twirling perfection!

And, yes, I know he’s clean shaven.

Do stay in touch, darlings.

Toodles!
