Framed to Perfection XIII

KOZURE OKAMI SHINIKAZE NI MUKAU UBAGURUMA (1972)

Director: Kenji Misumi

Cinematographer: Chikashi Makiura

Despite the deadly Itto’s silent charm and charisma, which runs counter to his gormless features and tubbywubby physique, it’s his intensely-brooding toddler Daigoro that usually manages to pull the birds.

This scene, following yet another upsetting assault, has the boy calming a distressed young woman with a pretty flower.

I really do appreciate the positioning of the actors here, from the woman’s lowly begging posture on the left, Itto’s passive demur to the right, and Daigoro standing ready to take positive action in the centre. The beautiful, offset Japanese lantern adds something extra special to the moment, which is why I felt moved to capture it.

I’m sure a sequel series would see the mature Daigoro starting a refuge for female victims of male brutality. Maybe the swordplay will come from him defending its borders from spurned lovers, abusive husbands, and loathsome pimps.

Remember, there are no bad ideas in brainstorming.

What?!

Do stay in touch, darlings.

Toodles!
